Homeport Employee Profile: Alex Romstedt

What do you like most about the organization?

What I like most about Homeport is its mission, to provide safe, decent, affordable housing. I’ve worked in the social work field for nearly a decade, and what I’ve found is that you can’t address most people’s needs without first addressing the issue of housing.

What have you done in your career that you are most proud of, or that people may not be aware of?

Since joining Homeport in 2011, I’ve seen our Service Coordination program grow from roughly 1,400 referral services in 2011 to 2,600 in 2014. Our team was able to make this happen by strategically identifying the needs of our communities, seeking out partners and resources to meet these needs, and finally, marketing them directly to residents. Developing and implementing this new model took a lot of hard work, which is why I’m so proud of Homeport and our Service Coordinators. This transformation not only dramatically changed the way we interact with our residents, but also how our residents see us; now, more than ever, they turn to Homeport when they need help, whether it’s help paying their bills, finding a job, or putting food on the table.

I’m also proud of the fact that I’ve made a career out of helping people. It’s an amazing feeling to know that the work you do actually changes lives for the better. Just think, the average person spends more time at work than they do with their family. So personally, I feel that whatever you spend your time doing, it better be meaningful at the end of the day.

Favorite things you do outside of work?

I love to be outside, whether it’s working in the yard, riding my bike, or camping. Right now however, my favorite thing to do is spend time with my family. My wife and I have a newborn baby girl at home, so more than anything I’ve been looking forward to sharing my favorite things with her.
