Homeport Employee Profile: Netta Whitman

Title: Assistant Director of Learning & Engagement

Responsibilities: As Assistant Director of Learning & Engagement, I am responsible for day-to-day operations in Housing Advisory Services, overseeing the Credit/Budget Counseling program, Foreclosure Prevention Counseling, Financial Coaching and all education workshops (Homebuyer Education, Financial Fitness, Home Repair). I also assist in grant applications, individual funder/lender reports and HUD reporting.

What do you like most about the organization?

The mission of Homeport to provide affordable housing and supportive services is my passion. My life at Homeport began in 2003 as the Administrative Assistant to Maude Hill in Community Relations, as well as the part-time Intake Specialist for Housing Advisory.  I was responsible for event planning, departmental travel & training arrangements, and managing the schedule of Ms. Hill and housing counselors.  I became a Housing Counselor in 2006 where I primarily focused on foreclosure prevention counseling.  I became Program Manager in 2010 responsible for pre-purchase programs such as Homebuyer Education, Financial Fitness and Credit/Budget Counseling.    In 2012 I became the Assistant Director of Learning and Engagement.  In each position that I have held I have been able to provide a critical service that adds immediate value to the lives of our clients.  We do not make widgets at Homeport but provide services and education that can help families improve their financial outlook -- to make an impact.  Whether the clients have a surplus or a deficit in their monthly budget, Housing Advisory programs can help and that is what matters to me.  I enjoy making my contribution to Homeport.

What have you done in your career that you are most proud of, or that people may not be aware of?

As a Housing Advisor I was most proud of assisting clients with saving their homes from foreclosure.  It provided a real sense of purpose to know that my efforts made a difference.

Favorite things you do outside of work?

I love to spend time with my husband of 22 years, John, and our two children.  I most enjoy attending and cheering at my children’s sporting events.  My daughter, Joy, 16, is the starting Middle Blocker for the Westerville Central Warhawks varsity volleyball team.  My son, John III, 20, is a starting Defensive Lineman for the Ball State University Cardinals football team in Muncie, Indiana. I like going to his games, home and away.  Ball State recently traveled to play my alma mater, Ohio University, in Athens. Being the good mother I am, I sat in the visitors section at Peden Stadium.
