Kingsford Homes Latest To Offer ‘Transformational Opportunity’

Helen Starghill vividly recalls 2001, the year she moved into her Kingsford Homes single family home.

“I watched it being built from the ground up,” Starghill said.

Fifteen years later, in early December, Starghill attended a meeting at Homeport’s offices she had always hoped to participate in -- to learn what steps it would take to purchase her home.

“Owning was my goal. I knew it was that type of program,” said Starghill.

Starghill is one of 33 potential Kingsford Home residents who are living in a Homeport home that offers the opportunity for purchase.

Since 2013 Homeport has been selling homes required to be leased for at least 15 years before possibly being sold.

Homeport has sold 11 homes in its Framingham Village community and continues to educate and assist residents there and in Greater Linden Homes on how to transition from a renter to owner.

“This is a transformational opportunity for our residents to become homebuyers,” said Will Wahler, Director of Asset Management at Homeport.

Homeport has 488 homes in its lease option portfolio, though most have yet to reach the 15-year requirement.

Not everyone is ready for homeownership, but Homeport’s vision is to empower its residents to dream and shape their future. The lease option program is part of that vision.

Homeport offers the potential buyers the individual counseling and courses needed to make for a successful transformation from renter to owner. They learn credit scores, financial fitness tips and are taught the responsibilities that come with home ownership.

At purchase, Homeport replaces the roof, furnace and water heater to minimize the large capital repairs the new homebuyer will experience in the first five years of ownership. The price of the home is also reduced $1,000 for every year the resident has lived in the home.

“Homeport is excited for the residents to purchase their home. The feedback we have received from residents is they are excited as well,” Wahler said.

Starghill, the future Kingsford Homes homeowner, agreed.

“I am very close. I am very excited. I can’t even describe it. The feeling. Wow. I am really about to be a homeowner,” Starghill said. “I have been shooting to this point since 2001. And I am just about there.”
