Homeport Employee Profile: Laverne Price

Laverne Price

Laverne Price

Title: Senior Director of Resource Development

Responsibilities: It is my responsibility to make sure our team identifies, develops and implements strategies to cultivate relationships with partners, donors, funders and sponsors. I do so in partnership with Homeport’s legendary Maude Hill, Senior Vice President VP of Government and Community Relations and Resource Development.

What do you like most about the organization?

What I like most about Homeport is its Mission.  We care about the wellbeing of families.  In many instances Homeport serves as a source of hope for families that do not know what to do to get ahead. Homeport allows individuals and families to dream and make those dreams a reality.

Long ago I told my Dad I wanted a job where I made a difference in the lives of others.  For fourteen years I have had that opportunity at Homeport and its predecessor name of Columbus Housing Partnership (CHP). Surprisingly, many years before I worked at Homeport, I was a client of the organization. My husband James and I took a workshop for individuals looking to be first time homebuyers.

What have you done in your career that you are most proud of, or that people may not be aware of?

As a staff person at Homeport, I began as a part-time assistant to Maude Hill in our Housing Advisory section.  Curious by nature, I used the intake position to learn more about housing and how it can impact the lives of others. I also continued to grow professionally. I worked with Leadership of the organization to develop, enhance and streamline many programs in the Housing Advisory Center.

My overall interest in learning afforded me opportunities to advance. As Homeport grew, so did I. In October 2014, I was promoted to Senior Director of Learning and Engagement where I was responsible for the education, counseling, programs and services offered to the residents of Homeport and the general public.

In April 2016, I transitioned to Resource Development.  Drawing on my knowledge of programs and services and the people we serve, I am able to assist in finding new sponsorship opportunities for the organization.

Central Ohio has an affordable home shortage of 54,000. We have a lot of work to do and I am happy to serve in an organization dedicated to meeting this need!

Favorite things I do outside of work?

When I am away from work I love spending time with my family.  My priorities in my life are God, my family and then everything else.  If I make sure that those areas are healthy, then everything else in my life seems to fall in line.

I enjoy cooking for and entertaining with my family and friends.  Seafood and Soul are my favorites. I love trying new recipes and getting new cooking ideas from my daughter Jasmine.  I have a passion for interior decorating and love to watch HGTV.

My husband James and I met in my native Cleveland. We have been married for 28 years and we have two awesome children, Jasmine and DeVon. We have a beautiful grandson McKinley also known as “Mac.”

My family enjoys spending holidays together. We love to travel together.  Since my family and many of my friends are not originally from Columbus, we spend most holidays in fellowship and enjoying activities together.
