Homeport Employee Profile: Lawrence Furst II

Lawrence Furst II

Lawrence Furst II

Title: Supportive Services Manager

Responsibilities: It is my responsibility to find the resources to make our residents successful, to help them establish and attain goals. In addition to this, I provide oversight of the Service Coordination program.  All of this looks different for different people, but it often includes linkage to employment and education resources, as well as providing emergency resources. I’ve had the opportunity to help prevent people from being evicted, linked them to employment opportunities and assisted them in finding them assistance to cover rent, utility bills or even car repairs -- a critical need for someone trying to get to work.

What do you like most about the organization?

Homeport is not only committed to providing affordable housing but building up our residents to succeed and have a stable life. Reaching goals is part of that process. A lot of times people know what they want to do and how to do it, but they just need support in getting there. I would not be where I am today if it were not for people supporting me along the way, and that drives my passion to help other people achieve their goals.

What have you done in your career that you are most proud of, or that people may not be aware of?

Lawrence and Captain Peppercorn

Lawrence and Captain Peppercorn

I am from Baltimore, Maryland and received both my bachelor and master degrees of Social Work from West Virginia University in Morgantown, W.VA. I moved to Columbus in 2012 and have worked in community mental health throughout Franklin County as a community outreach counselor and an office-based therapist. I joined Homeport in Feb 2016.  I am most proud of the ability I’ve have been blessed with, to act as a catalyst for change for individuals.

Favorite things I do outside of work?

I like to travel to new places, and afford myself new experiences.  I am an avid bicyclist. I primarily enjoy road cycling. I also spend a lot of time with my dog, a seven and a half year old Dalmatian that I named Captain Peppercorn. Columbus has been very nice to me, and Ohio is certainly my adopted state, but I try to get home to the East Coast as often as possible.  I fully support my West Virginia Mountaineers, University of Maryland Terrapins, Baltimore Orioles and Baltimore Ravens.  I enjoy going to auto racing events, and one day hope to pursue my own business venture.
