Responsibilities: Help manage the Finance team to produce financial statements within the context of Generally Accepted Accounting Principles, manage cash flow and participate with the annual audit. I also work to create infrastructure (accounting systems) that capture the essence of our business to allow the program teams to carry out our true mission work.
What do I like most about the organization?
I like the fact that the organization’s mission is to make the world a better place by providing a safe, decent and affordable home to create the cornerstone for stability in life. I’ve never worked in an organization where there were so many passionate people embracing a common goal. It was refreshing when I came here 8 years ago as resources were prioritized by people’s needs instead of a strictly bottom-line perspective.
What have you done in your career that people may not be aware of?
I have worked in mortgage banking, telecommunications, manufacturing, insurance, retail, real estate, nonprofit and as a project consultant. It’s ironic that I’ve spent most of my career in the realm of accounting as I did not enjoy accounting in college. I have a Bachelor’s Degree in Business Administration with a major in finance and minor in economics. I have a true interest in the analytical side of accounting and how the analysis applies to managing the organization.
When I grow up I want to be a cowboy.
Favorite things I do outside of work?
Some of my favorite activities are year-round gardening, planting trees (over 20,000 hardwoods and pine trees on our 80-acre farm north of Lancaster), playing with chainsaws, tractors and chasing our two rescued Australian Shepherds around the property. We have previously grown/sold Christmas trees and had Hereford cattle for beef. Our current primarily crop is timber and we have a small orchard with approximately 15 fruit and nut trees for personal consumption. We also enjoy traveling with our kids and grandkids (Northern California redwoods this summer, North Shore Tahoe last summer, Chautauqua Institute annually).
Mahatma Gandhi employed nonviolent civil disobedience as a means for change. Gandhi influenced important leaders and political movements across the globe which is the positive energy the world needs to ultimately become sustainable at the lowest (individual) and highest (global consciousness) levels.
Albert Einstein was a visionary whose quotes are timeless. One of my favorites: “Try not to become a man of success, but rather try to become a man of value.”
What do I like about Central Ohio?
You can enjoy the cultural activities of the city and drive 30 minutes in any direction and be in the woods. We highly recommend the Midland Theatre in Newark as a hidden gem in the central Ohio area for various musical and theatrical events.
