Marie and Jimmy Moreland: Stories of American Addition

Marie Odessa Moreland Short was born on February 17, 1950 in Columbus, Ohio to Willie and Minerva Zellner Phillips. She went home to be with the Lord on Saturday, December 9, 2017 at The Ohio State University Hospital.
Marie was a lifelong resident of the American Addition community. She attended Columbus Public Schools and graduated from the Lawton School. She was a retiree of General Motors, and a long time advocate of her community. She served as volunteer director of the Tray Lee Center, and organizer and developer of the American Addition Community Garden. She served on numerous boards and worked with countless organizations in the Greater Columbus area. She gave of herself selflessly to the benefit of her family, her neighborhood, and any cause that would positively impact her fellowman. She firmly believed that she could "do all things through Christ that strengthens me." — Philippians 4:13 KJV
She was preceded in death by her parents, Willie and Minerva Phillips; her sister, Clarine Hunt; her husband, J.C. Short; and stepdaughter, Teresa Short. She is survived by those she held dear: her daughter, Georgeann "Princess" Smith (Chris Sims); son, Jimmie (Tuhecha) Moreland, Ill; brother, Alan (Jannice) Rafiyq; brother-in-law, Roosevelt (Norvell) Short; sisters-in-law, Ellis Short and Lydia Short; stepchildren, James, Larry and Juan Short, and Carolyn Sanders; grandchildren, Landon Banks, Dailan Hardiman, Jeremiah, Hannah and Taylor Moreland; 11 step-grandchildren; nieces, Rose Douthitt and Meka Rafiyq; nephew, Alan (Kristy) Rafiyq; cherished friends, Teresa Miller, Theresa Roberts, Peggy Murphy, Eliana Gomez, Robert Seed, and a host of other relatives and friends.
